Summary:

  • Using Genio Notes, New Majority Learners successfully maintained a higher baseline (+0.15 increase, 3.46 GPA average).
  • Genio Notes lowers stress levels for all, with New Majority Learners seeing particular benefit, reporting lower average stress (4.10) than traditional peers (4.34) over 3 years.
  • With Genio Notes, New Majority Learners overindex on confidence growth by 17.2 percentage points.

Non-traditional learners constitute the New Majority across higher education in the US today, requiring increased levels of support to empower them to succeed.

Genio’s recent research project indicates that by using Genio Notes, New Majority Learners not only achieve, but maintain higher GPAs, feel less stressed than their peers and are more confident in their learning.

How Genio Notes supports New Majority Learners

To understand how students experience Genio Notes differently, we researched over 300 users to analyze how Genio Notes was impacting their education.

Critically, this study was undertaken over three years to demonstrate how they were being supported not only over a semester, but throughout their studies. The research highlighted three key areas of longitudinal support.

Genio Notes enables GPA maintenance

For New Majority Learners, not only securing, but maintaining a high GPA is a significant achievement. When using Genio Notes, this proves that the tool neutralizes systemic disadvantage for learners with barriers, whether they be inherent or circumstantial.

While traditional students tend to sprint toward higher grades, New Majority Learners are running a weighted marathon. Maintaining a 3.46 GPA while working 30 hours a week or managing a disability is not the norm.

For them, Genio Notes acts as a stabilizer that prevents the GPA decay typically seen in high-need populations.

“I have been able to maintain a 4.0 GPA for a year and a half so far, and I don't see any sign of it changing by graduation. It is by far and away the best app for anyone with ADHD to use in class for a worry-free learning experience.”

Justin, Ohio University - Athens

Genio Notes reduces student stress

Student stress is nothing new, but despite this, it is a consistent cause in the derailing of a learner’s higher education journey. When using Genio Notes, particularly over multiple years, there is clear evidence of a consistent reduction in academic stress.

Over the three years, there is a demonstrable stress inversion, New Majority Learners reporting lower average stress scores (4.10) than traditional peers (4.34) over 3 years.

This is a story of longitudinal resilience. Typically, New Majority Learners report escalating anxiety as their degree progresses. However, the multi-year data reveals that New Majority Learners using Genio Notes experience the opposite.

“This helps relieve anxiety, too. Sometimes I leave class feeling bad because I wasn't able to pay attention well. Genio makes me feel better because I know I can go back and listen again at my own pace.”

Leah Goetz, University of Illinois at Chicago

Genio Notes increases student confidence

Traditional higher education formats tend to put New Majority Learners at a disadvantage. Therefore, building academic self-efficacy in those historically excluded or marginalized populations is vital for their academic success.

It is not just about giving students the information they need, it is about giving them the belief they can succeed.

Over the three year period, New Majority Learners using Genio Notes overindexed on confidence growth by 17.2 percentage points. This is a critical driver in reducing stress, boosting academic performance and persisting on their higher education journey.

"I feel empowered to go to class now. I used to skip because I knew I wouldn't be able to keep up with the notes anyway."

On demand webinar: Productive friction - The science of learning with AI

AI can summarise a two-hour lecture in two seconds. It feels like magic, but for a student’s brain, it’s a trap.

In this 1 hour session, we explore why your brain needs struggle to remember, a concept called productive friction.
