Built for active learning
We take decades of learning science and turn it into beautifully simple tools that make learning stick. We champion independent learning and don't believe in tools that work on autopilot.
Note taking is a core skill that takes practice and requires students to actively process their learning. We help students develop this skill, so they can create meaningful notes to help them when studying later.

Genio Notes' learning principles
Using Genio Notes , students can take charge of their studies by combining manual tasks with intentional automation, minimizing the waste in learning while ensuring proactive participation in the process.
The result? Increased confidence, better grades, and learning skills that last far beyond graduation.

Mind
Learning is personal, and it's a cognitive process
We all have different brains, with different strengths and weaknesses. Understanding yours is one of the most important steps in becoming an effective learner.
Your memory, attention, and ways of processing information are shaped by both biology and experience — and by your current state.
Fatigue, stress, anxiety, or other life factors can reduce working memory capacity, make it harder to concentrate, and slow processing.
Knowing when you learn best, and getting support when those factors are in play, can make a big difference.
Everyone faces learning bottlenecks — moments where something holds you back. It might be a gap in your knowledge, a missing skill, or the absence of the right tool. Identifying and addressing these can lead to huge leaps forward.
Learning works best when you use strategies that align with how your brain operates: break ideas into manageable parts, connect them visually, practise retrieving them, and space out your study.
Knowledge is a foundation — the more you know, the more deeply you can think, analyse, and create. Technology can help you find and adapt strategies that fit you — tracking progress, reducing overload, and making the process more efficient.

Heart
Confidence, agency, and enjoyment build independent learners
Believing you can learn makes you far more likely to start, persist, and succeed.
Confidence grows when you see progress, get feedback, and feel safe to make mistakes.
Agency means you decide what matters and how to approach it — and that ownership fuels growth.
Curiosity is a powerful source of motivation; it sparks when you notice a gap in your knowledge and want to close it.
Positive emotions sustain effort, and play in learning can make challenges feel more like exploration than assessment.
Learning alongside others makes it stronger, as social interaction brings energy and new perspectives.
Technology can give you more control — adapting pace, removing friction, and connecting you with people and resources that make learning more meaningful.

Action
Learning is a process, and it requires output
We live in a world of passive consumption, but learning sticks when you engage with it. Even small actions count — like highlighting a key point, jotting a note, or marking something for review — because you’ve processed the material in your own way.
The more interactive the activity — summarising, mapping, teaching, or testing yourself — the deeper the learning.
Collaboration and social learning enhance output by providing feedback, new angles, and motivation. Feedback at every stage helps you focus, improve, and move faster.
Learning happens over time, so follow the process: capture, organise, refine, and apply. Just-in-time learning, using the right resource at the moment of need, can make knowledge more relevant and memorable.
Technology can connect the steps, remove wasted effort, and make it easier to create, adapt, and share your work.
Making output personal — something you’ve built yourself — can increase pride, ownership, and the motivation to keep going.
"After more than 30 years in higher education, working at a community college serving an 11-county area around Nashville, I can confidently say Genio Notes is one of the best tools we’ve come across.
I love seeing how it helps our students stay organized, learn more effectively, and ultimately do better in their classes.
It’s simple, intuitive, and really makes a difference... It’s a tool that truly supports both student success and smoother communication across our college."

Developing study skills
Many students find it difficult to learn effective study habits. Since these skills aren’t often taught, students often rely on methods like memorizing, cramming, or simply highlighting textbooks without real understanding.
Our learning tools and study support courses increase the knowledge, skills, and confidence that students need to become self-sufficient, engaged and effective learners.

The Confident Notetaker's Masterclass
Improve the academic preparedness of your students with our on-demand note taking course. It is agnostic to Genio and teaches important foundational techniques.
- 84% of pre-release testers said their confidence in note taking increased after completing the course.
- 94% of students who tested the course learned something new.
- 51% more students during the pre-launch testing reported clearer note taking strategies after completing the course.
Available to all Genio Notes users.
Accessibility and flexibility
Genio Notes helps you meet ADA compliance for a lower cost and less admin time.
But it’s more than just a checkbox. This tool really works. Genio Notes makes advanced learning support available to everyone, eliminating barriers related to disability, academic preparedness, or time constraints.

Learning technology built differently
Genio Notes creates learning technology that is ethical, privacy-focused, and grounded in learning science to support all students.

Ethical use of AI and data
We’re careful about how we use AI in our products, that’s why:
- We don't sell or rent user data
- We don't allow third parties to train their AI models on Genio Notes data
- We don't automatically record, transcribe, summarize, or generate quizzes for users, users must choose to take these actions.
Moreover, we think very carefully about how we leverage AI in our product to ensure it is additive to the learning process. Rather than attempting to automate everything the learner does, Genio Notes is selective about the steps it offloads to AI, and the steps we ensure the student must still do themselves.
We use AI to remove unproductive friction, such as searching through long recordings or transcripts, but retain the productive friction, like the process of synthesizing notes.
Proactive participation
Effective learning begins with proactive participation and a student’s intentional actions in their learning process. That means going beyond passive listening in class, to a situation where, as material is presented, students are actively doing something with the knowledge. This proactive participation serves as a crucial scaffold for active engagement.
With Genio Notes, students are constructing their own learning paths with captured and organized content. Think of it like a high-tech workbench equipped with specialized tools (e.g., a precise saw, a powerful drill, an organized set of blueprints). The workbench and tools don't build the project for the student, but they enable the student to actively cut, shape, and assemble components during the building process. The student still has to perform the actions, but Genio Notes provides the means to do so effectively.

Innovation through experimentation
Through an iterative design process based on research with real students, we know our product is solving real problems for learners and educators.
We gather feedback through our 'Genio Insiders' research panel and undertake prototype testing to gather feedback from real students to shape our features. Learners can also opt in to Feature Preview, allowing them to use the beta version of new features to help us gather feedback.
This ensures we develop with consideration, making practical trade offs to guarantee focussed technological applications.

Learning science baked in
Genio Notes goes beyond traditional note taking to leverage the power of how we learn. Built on learning science principles, Genio Notes minimizes the strain on working memory, allowing students to focus on actively engaging in the lecture.
Genio Notes' approach includes Dual Coding theory by allowing students to capture information through both audio recordings and visual elements including images and Scribbles.
Powered by Multimedia Learning principles, which show that combining these elements reduces cognitive load and boosts memory, this comprehensive approach maximizes knowledge retention, making Genio Notes a powerful study tool for academic success.
