Productive Friction: The Science of Learning with AI

AI can summarise a two-hour lecture in two seconds. It feels like magic, but for a student’s brain, it’s a trap.

When we remove the effort from learning, we remove the learning itself. This is the 'Efficiency Paradox.' In this 1-hour session, we explore why your brain needs struggle to remember, a concept called Productive Friction.

We will demonstrate how Genio Notes is designed to support thinking rather than replace it, aligning perfectly with the new UK Department for Education AI Standards which now explicitly warn against "cognitive offloading."

Join us to see the future of safe, effective learning.

GENIO launch campaign padlock 2-1

The "Magic" of AI is creating a crisis of competence. For years, the goal of EdTech was to make things easier. But new research, and now new government policy, confirms what we have always suspected: when AI does the thinking for you, your brain stops growing.

In this 1-hour session, we are diving deep into the science of Productive Friction. We will explore how we turn information into knowledge, and why the "struggle" to recall facts is actually the engine of long-term memory.

New Government Standards: Validation of the Genio Approach

The conversation has shifted from "how fast can AI do it?" to "is this safe for learning?" The UK Department for Education (DfE) has now released its Generative AI: Productive Safety Standards, marking a turning point for the industry.

The new standards target "Cognitive Offloading", the habit of letting AI do the heavy lifting. The DfE now expects products to:

  • Track and report when learners are offloading their thinking to a system.
  • Detect actions that indicate a student is asking the AI to do the work for them.
  • Avoid "Answer Engine" mechanics that provide full solutions by default.

This is not just about recording classes; it is about protecting the cognitive development of the next generation.
