Prevention Over Cure: What The New Majority Needs From The Student Success Office
The age of the ‘traditional’ student has passed, but our support systems too often remain the same. If you feel you’re constantly reacting to fresh demands from students, it begs the question: are you optimising support for the wrong learners?
19th March 2026, 13:00PM (US Eastern Time)
Nearly one-quarter (22.3%) of full-time first-year students drop out within 12 months of starting, and for part-time first-year students, more than half (54.9%) fail to complete their first year — all while enrollment numbers and federal funding levels are declining. What’s more, the need for additional learning support is growing, especially as the number of non-traditional students — such as parents, people working full time and English-language learners — is increasing. These “New Majority Learners” face unique learning challenges that often require additional support if they are to succeed.
The traditional approach of intervening after students begin to struggle or only when a diagnosis is in place won’t work. Instead, a growing body of evidence suggests that proactive, preventative strategies provide a more effective path to student success.
