Summary:

  • Over 70% of students using Genio Notes showed an increase in Academic Self-Efficacy (ASE)
  • Students with ADHD, dyslexia, or auditory processing challenges saw the highest increase in ASE levels
  • Proactive use of Genio Notes creates "mastery signals" that validate a learner's self belief
  • The strongest ASE gains occurred in self-regulated learning, leading to increased mastery and confidence
  • Genio Notes' structured confirmations and digital scaffolding are particularly beneficial to New Majority Learners or those with additional cognitive needs

Academic Self-Efficacy (ASE) is a learner’s belief in their own capacity to organize and successfully complete academic tasks.

Derived from Bandura’s social cognitive theory, ASE is the internal engine that drives academic achievement. It acts as a foundational driver of success, directly influencing how learners negotiate the challenging transition into higher education and how they adjust to new academic demands (Chemers, Hu, & Garcia, 2001).

As modern higher education continues to see a demographic shift toward New Majority Learners (NMLs), fast-paced campus life and structural barriers can lower baseline ASE, turning lectures into sources of cognitive strain and anxiety.

New independent research reveals that by turning the lecture experience into a series of manageable, confidence-building "mastery experiences", Genio Notes significantly improves learners’ ASE and delivers measurable learning outcomes.

Why is learner confidence important?

Confidence isn’t just a feel-good metric, it is the fundamental catalyst for academic success. When learners believe in their ability to succeed, they unlock the persistence needed to navigate complex challenges and master new material.

At Genio Notes, we enable this confidence through our CORA framework, which acts as a digital scaffold for our learners. Based on decades of learning research, it comes down to 4 simple steps: Capture, Organize, Refine & Apply.

It is through this process that ASE flourishes. By reducing cognitive load and encouraging active engagement with study content, Genio Notes learners can build ‘micro-mastery loops’ that enhance their academic confidence.

According to Zimmerman (2002), self-efficacy beliefs shape the goals learners set, the strategies they adopt toward achieving them, and their persistence when facing challenges.

We’ve seen the connection between confidence and attainment firsthand: our 2026 Learner Impact Survey found that over 80% of learners felt more confident in their note taking skills, and GPA scores improved by 3% on average, as a result of using Genio Notes.

How was Academic Self-Efficacy measured?

To understand how Genio Notes impacts learner’s ASE outcomes, independent research was undertaken by Dr Laura White, an Honorary Senior Research Fellow of the University College of London’s Institute of Education.

The study tracked 482 participants over a 12-week semester to examine the relationship between Genio Notes and ASE development.

The research utilized a mixed-methods design, integrating quantitative data from the College Academic Self-Efficacy Scale (CASES), a validated psychometric measure of students’ confidence in completing a range of academic tasks,  with qualitative student accounts and platform usage analytics.

What ASE gains do students achieve with Genio Notes?

The results revealed a statistically significant rise in Academic Self-Efficacy across the sample, with 70.1% of students demonstrating increased CASES scores by the end of the study.

A clear "dose-response" pattern emerged from the data: students classified as proactive users, those who moved beyond recording alone to actively organize, refine, and apply their materials, showed a mean confidence increase of nearly double the growth of inactive users.

These gains were most pronounced in the domains of self-regulated learning and cognitive indicators, suggesting that Genio Notes first impacts a student’s confidence in managing their study behaviors before translating into broader academic identity.

"Genio has greatly helped me in making sure I don't miss things my teacher has said. It has also helps me when my focus starts to fade during class, especially during long lectures."

How does Genio Notes empower students with additional needs?

The research revealed that the effect of Genio Notes usage was particularly transformative for students with self-disclosed additional needs, such as ADHD, dyslexia, and auditory processing challenges.

This group demonstrated 2.5 times larger mean increases in ASE compared to students without disclosed needs.

Students managing attentional or executive regulation challenges reported that Genio Notes’ structured features directly mapped to their regulatory needs, allowing them to overcome feelings of academic doubt.

How does Genio Notes enable “micro-mastery”?

The study identified a four-step process through which Genio Notes builds higher levels of Academic Self-Efficacy:

  1. Reduced pressure: Knowing a recording exists lowers anxiety about missing key information.

  2. Freed attention: Lower stress allows students to listen deeply and process meaning in real-time.

  3. Structured strategy: Students use transcripts and quizzes to engage in active review.

  4. Mastery confirmation: Successful self-testing and verification provide repeated signals of competence.

"Each resolved uncertainty and successful check functions as a small experience of mastery. These repeated cycles of retrieval, evaluation, and adjustment can be thought of as micro-mastery loops."

How does Genio Notes scaffold success?

This research demonstrates that Genio Notes does more than help students take better notes; it fosters the psychological resilience required to thrive in a demanding academic environment.

By turning daily study tasks into small, repeatable wins, Genio Notes gives New Majority Learners the boost they need to feel like they can truly succeed in higher education.

See how Genio Notes supports students across higher education by boosting confidence, elevating study skills and improving academic performance.
