When Practice Without Feedback Isn't Practice

Beki Warner has just completed her undergraduate degree in Politics and International Relations at Royal Holloway, University of London. Presentations are baked into the course, and over three years Beki tried everything she could think of to prepare for them.

"I've done it to my parents, I've done it to teddy bears, I've done it to the mirror. And it's not really helpful because I have no feedback."

That absence of feedback was the core problem. Practising without it meant repeating the same habits without knowing which ones were holding her back. Genio Present changed that dynamic entirely, giving Beki specific, actionable insight into her delivery for the first time.

Learning to Speak, Not Just to Talk

For Beki, the challenge of presenting goes beyond nerves. Her autism affects how she naturally communicates, something her lecturers had pointed out before she found Present.

"Because of my autism, I tend to speak in a way that's not very engaging. I kind of got a very straight to the point robotic tone, as I've been told by some lecturers before I got Present."

The software helped Beki work on the specific areas she found most difficult: filler words, pace, expressiveness, and eye contact. Practising with a camera on screen gave her a way to get used to looking towards someone's face while she spoke, something she had previously avoided altogether. Present's feedback on hand gestures opened up another avenue too, allowing her body language to carry expression even when her vocal tone felt flat.

"It managed to help me be a bit more expressive with how I talk... I can show some more expression through my body language. So let's say even if my voice is kind of flatlined, I can show some more expression."

Firsts Across the Board

The results spoke for themselves. With Genio Present as part of her preparation, Beki achieved a first in every graded presentation she delivered this year, and she credits the tool directly.

"I've managed to achieve a first in all of them. And I genuinely, wholeheartedly believe that if I hadn't had something like Present, I wouldn't have managed to really get the grades."

For a student who once dreaded standing up to speak, that outcome represents far more than a grade. It reflects a genuine shift in confidence, built one practice session at a time.
