For students in Canada looking to unlock more effective and efficient learning, there are a number of routes available to them to access technology like Genio Notes.
If you have a permanent disability, and are enrolled full-time in an eligible course at a post-16 education institution, you may be eligible for the Canada Student Grant for Services and Equipment – Students with Disabilities.
This is a means tested government grant that provides financial aid for post-secondary students with disabilities. This grant helps cover the costs of services and equipment that are essential for your learning.
Genio Notes is regularly recommended and funded through this grant program, particularly if you need support with note taking. You can also use it to secure funding for other assistive technologies such as speech-to-text, text-to-speech and mind mapping software.
How to check if you are eligible?
To qualify for the services and equipment grant, you must meet the following criteria:
- Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident;
- Have a permanent disability;
- Be enrolled full-time in an eligible program at a designated post-secondary institution;
- Demonstrate financial need; and
- Require specific services or equipment to support your studies due to your disability.
With your application you will need to supply:
- Document(s) that show that you have a disability;
- Written confirmation from a qualified person that you need education-related services or equipment; and
- A document which confirms the related cost of equipment and services.
To confirm your education-related services or equipment, a qualified person can be a:
- Rehabilitation caseworker;
- Official from your school’s students disability service;
- Guidance counselor; or
- Financial aid administrator from your school.
How do I apply?
We’d recommend speaking to your Disability Student Services first, as they’ll be able to advise on the application process and provide assistance in doing this.
The grant application will be through your province or territory's student financial aid office. You can contact them directly for application details and deadlines. Visit your local office to find details.
The amount you receive will depend on your individual needs, financial situation and the services and equipment you require. Likewise, Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Quebec have their own student aid programs so it’s worth checking what is available for your particular set of circumstances in your area.

What if I am not eligible for any grants?
If you are unable to access the grant, don’t worry, there are other options available to you.
Your school may already have Genio Notes licences that you can access. To find out if they do, visit the link below and search for your institution.
If your institution doesn’t have licenses, you can still access Genio Notes on a free trial and, at the same time, notify your school that you’d like to use our technology beyond the trial period.
